The history of collage begins with Cubism, a movement that
is as forgotten as it was celebrated. When we see a ‘cubist’ painting we know
what it is about. But the concept behind Cubism originated from a desire to
launch the creative practice away from painting—or rather to paint in new ways,
with fragments of objects and printed imagery suggestive of the essence of
objects. In “Splitting Infinity” I am attempting to address one of the
formative ideas behind Cubist collage: that a split between reality and its
depiction makes for a necessary evolution in artistic thinking, and will
likewise result in how we each view the world.
